Loving father of Marian Greenspan (Paul Kromberg) of Fairfax Station and Bernie Greenspan (Barbara) of Beachwood, Ohio; brother of Murray Greenspan, San Diego, Calif.; grandfather of Jessica, Stephanie and Rebecca; great-grandfather of Ethan, Jonah, Brooke and Deven.

Harry J. Greenspan, economist and analyst

 

Harry J. Greenspan, 96, an economist and analyst who had worked for the Labor Department and private nonprofit organizations, died Oct. 15 at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington. He was a Bethesda resident.

 

He had acute pancreatitis, said his daughter, Marian Greenspan.

 

Mr. Greenspan retired from the Labor Department in 1974. He worked in the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Office of Manpower Administration, where he was chief of the division of resource allocation, planning and evaluation.

 

Early in his career, he was a productivity analyst in the Navy’s Bureau of Ships.

 

After retiring from federal service, Mr. Greenspan was an economist and evaluator with the National Planning Association, the National Research Council and the Bureau of Social Science Research.

 

He became a certified public accountant at 77 and did part-time tax preparation.

 

Harry Joseph Greenspan was a native of Duluth, Minn., and a 1941 graduate of the University of Minnesota. He received a master’s degree in economics from the University of Minnesota in 1949. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

 

Mr. Greenspan was a former president of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Jewish Community Group and the Bannockburn Community Club.

 

His wife of 65 years, Anita Louise Bubley Greenspan, died in 2005. Survivors include two children, Marian Greenspan of Fairfax Station and Bernie Greenspan of Beachwood, Ohio; a brother; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by a large extended family. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday October 27, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. at the Pooks Hill Marriott, 5151 Pooks Hill Rd. Bethesda, MD.
